Consulting & Guest Speaking

offered by Tana M. Schiewer

Let me put my experience to work for you!

For 10 years, I worked in nonprofit management, leading two separate nonprofits to regional and state awards and working in a variety of positions including Grant Writer, Annual Fund Manager, and Executive Director.  In these positions, I have collectively helped to raise nearly $9 million in funds through individual donations, corporate sponsorships, special events, and grant funds (private, local, state, and federal). Additionally, I have volunteered with and consulted for many organizations, learning more about the efforts necessary to attract donors and volunteers, provide effective programs, and prevent mission drift. Now, in my graduate career, I am learning even more about the power of language to help shape nonprofit communications.

I specialize in helping smaller nonprofits achieve sustainability through writing effective grant proposals, training staff in grant writing, and developing strategic communications. In addition to one-on-one consulting, I also offer workshops on the topics of “Compelling Messages for Nonprofits” and “Successful Grant Writing.” Check back often for new offerings, or check out my events and presentations page for upcoming workshops.

Fundraising and Grant Writing
I provide “Successful Grant Writing” workshops for large groups and individual organizations.

Workshop covers:

  • Basic components you need for grant proposals
  • Understanding RFPs
  • Where to find grants
  • What funders look for
  • Tips for success

I can also customize trainings to include the issues you wish to work on including but not limited to improving your writing skills.

Additional consulting available for fundraising appeals, case statements, and more. If you are interested in obtaining consulting for a fundraising campaign, hiring a grant writer, or sponsoring a “Successful Grant Writing” workshop, please contact me for a quote.

Messaging/Communication
My “Compelling Messages” workshop covers a basic communication strategy and has been very well-received by many nonprofit leaders.

During this workshop, we discuss:

  • Why a 30-second commercial might not be the way to go
  • What to develop instead
  • Getting your staff and volunteers on the same page
  • Touting your accomplishments
  • Understanding your audience

In addition to my years of experience in nonprofit management, I am also a scholar of rhetoric and writing, currently completing my doctorate at Virginia Tech. My dissertation is on mission statements in nonprofit organizations, and I have spent a lot of time working with nonprofits to revise their mission statements and improve their messaging strategies. My studies in rhetoric and writing have taught me how to understand communication from a number of angles, including determining the right message for your audience, understanding the action you want your words to inspire, and choosing the correct platform for those words to be heard.
